Petty Larceny, The Answer Brewpub (Richmond, VA)

brew_20767We wrap up our Memorial Day series with our final stop on our Richmond tour. Sometimes expectation can build so high that it is hard to live up to it. For example, I went out to see Jurassic World last week and there was already such a buzz around it combined with my experiences of seeing Jurassic Park in the theaters umpteen years ago, that after the movie, I thought it was good not great. That happens sometime with me and craft breweries. A lot of times people tell me ‘You got to check this one out’ or ‘Don’t miss this one when you go here’, and more often than not, it does not pan out. Worried, I approached The Answer Brewpub for my first time with curbed enthusiasm, only to have my expectations blown out of the water with the quality beer list and signature craft beer.

Petty Larceny, The Answer Brewpub (Richmond, VA)
Session IPA, ABV: 5.0%

Presentation: Tap pour into tulep glass.

Appearance: Light to pale yellow. White head that doesn’t sit long and slightly rings the glass.

Aroma: The word on this one is ‘Mosaic’. The single hopping imparts a huge citrus and earthy pine to the aroma that is quite large for a session.

Taste: Very hop front starting mineral/earth/pine, hitting lemon zest right in the middle, finishing hoppy pine. A very strong flavor profile.

ABV/IBU Mouthfeel: Light and thin, which is surprising that there is a ton of flavor in it. Now because it is lighter, the 5% ABV does impart a little alcohol back, but the IBUs keep that to a minimum. Finishes on hop side past reset.

Overall: They squeezed everything out of the Mosaic hops on this one. It feels like a session but drinks like a full IPA. I would love to see it out of The Answer, but this beer alone is reason enough to head down 250. And their are 2 more in the ‘Larceny’ series that are equally as good. It was the best beer we had on the trip, and if you followed our reviews, we’ve already thrown some big numbers around. I would like to taste this next to some other sessions from around the US and it would hold it’s own very well. Looking forward to continued success from An!
