A Hopwork Orange, Blue Mountain Brewery (Afton, VA)

HopworkOrange_sticker-01-200x200Beer names have gotten fun. The war between breweries and beer names will rage on forever, sort of like the early race for world wide web domains in the 90s. You don’t want to have the most amazing beer in the world and have to call it ‘Alpha Penguin New Mexico’ cause all the other names have been taken. But the flip side of this is your beer has to back up that name. I would be remiss to say that I have had my eye on this one for a while cause it had an interesting name, but after trying it, I found it to be a great IPA to boot.

A Hopwork Orange, Blue Mountain Brewery (Afton, VA)
Orange IPA, ABV: 7.0%, IBU: 65

Presentation: Can pour into pint glass. Would have had it straight from a can, but this was a beer glass kind of place. No complaints here.

Appearance: Deep golden color with a hint of orange, white head that sat for a second and dissipated quickly.

Smell: Orange peel. Orange peel. Orange peel. …(citrusy hops)…

Taste: This was a tough decision on how to truly convey what the heavy, upfront, and constant in-your-face orange tasted like. Like a sugar-coated candy orange. Grandma’s candy orange. like you didn’t know that flavor of orange candy existed, but there it is, stuck to one that looks like grapefruit and several others. Solid hop note picks up in the middle and rides out the rest of the taste.

ABV/IBU Mouthfeel: Medium body and initial sweetness finishes slightly dry. IBUs play nicely towards the back in this one. Orange covers up any perceived ABV in this one.

Overall: There are a lot of orange infused IPAs out there. This is not one of those. Your either gonna like it or not. The orange is so different in this beer compared to others that while we enjoyed it, other might not. This is a solid summer beer and with it available in cans, perfect for a cooler. If you are able to try this beer first, do, before you commit to a 6-pack. I think you will be on board with this beer like we were.
