BR: Dark Hollow Artisanal Ale, Blue Mountain Brewery (Afton, VA)

Stouts have always been something for me that require the right mood and mindset to be enjoyed. I had a Dark Hollow once before and did not remember much about it, but decided to give it another try on a rainy, cool night in Richmond. Turns out this beer was a perfect compliment, in name and in taste, for the mood mother nature had set even in late April. The brewers at Blue Mountain have really crafted something special with this blend of a stout’s traditional smoothness intertwined in a bite you would expect to find in a neat glass poured from your favorite bottle on the top shelf.

Dark Hollow Artisanal Ale, Blue Mountain Brewery (Afton, VA)

American Double/Imperial Stout, ABV: 10%, IBU: 79

Presentation: Tap pour into pint glass.

Appearance: Black, creamy white/tan head dissipating slowly.

Taste: With more than a hint of oak and whiskey infused from the aging process, this isn’t your father’s stout.

ABV: Dark Hollow makes no attempt to conceal the 10% ABV, the boozy smell and taste almost remind you of a strong scotch ale.

Overall: Guinness drinkers who proclaim to be lovers of all things stout should be clear on what they are getting into before opening or asking for a Dark Hollow. For most people, this is not a beer I would recommend having more than one or two of in a night unless your only plans involve a pillow. However, if you are looking for an enjoyable combination of bitterness and warmth in a beer made to be shared in cool weather around a campfire, consider packing a growler of this stout for the next trek to your favorite hollow.

Score: 8.0
